ROULETTE HOUSE EDGE

The Roulette house edge is generally the same for all bets; straight up, streets, odds & evens etc.

The house edge differs on roulette depending on whether you are playing against an American Roulette wheel or a European Roulette wheel. The difference is that the American Roulette wheel has both 0 and 00. The European Roulette wheel only has the 0. Thus, the American Roulette wheel will create a house edge of 5.26%. In comparison, the European Roulette wheel will only have a house edge of 2.70%. For this reason, you should ALWAYS choose to play on the European Roulette wheel.

You can further cut the Roulette house edge by looking for a casino that allows the En Prison rule. The En Prison rule covers only the even money bets. When the ball lands on zero, the bet is not immediately lost. Instead, the bet is “imprisoned” for the next spin. When a bet is en prison, the bet can be taken back by the player if they hit in the next spin. If their bet misses again, then the house takes the bet. The En Prison rule further cuts the house edge in half for even money bets. It is difficult to find a casino that still plays the En Prison rule anymore but you should keep an eye out for it.

While the En Prison rule might be dying out, there is an equivalent emerging in online roulette. Some online microgaming casinos will offer French Roulette, which plays the La Partage rule. The La Partage rule is similar to the En Prison rule. When the La Partage rule is in play, even money bets only lose half their wager on zero results. The house edge on French Roulette is effectively 1.38%, so is much better than either American or European Roulette.

There is one online casino - Betfair - that has developed a roulette game with zero house edge. Zero Roulette has no 0 or 00, meaning that players gets true odds. This is the best roulette game available to players and you should stick to Zero Roulette if it is available in your country.

Roulette players can also use an advantage player mentality to further reduce the house edge by taking maximum advantage of casino comps and VIP cash backs. This is especially interesting in online casinos; where many online casinos will offer quite generous cash backs which effectively reduce the house edge by around 1%. This all makes a difference to your long run expected value.

So always try to look for the best roulette game possible, especially with the above factors in mind.

Good Luck
