Good money management is what will
ensure the survival of your bankroll
beyond the short term deviations of
luck and bad beats. There is really no
way to become a professional player
or build a bankroll successfully
without some understanding of good
money management.
Good money management draws heavily on having discipline. The discipline to stick to a
given set of rules despite whatever emotional roller coaster you might be on. This is
especially important in games like NLH poker where there will naturally be great
deviations up and down in your bankroll. A single hand and you can double your money
or even lose it all. To realise the positive expected value of your relative skill, you need
to be able to play into the long run where everything starts to balance out.

Chris Ferguson Bankroll Management rules
Chris Ferguson is a successful tournament player with 5 W.S.O.P bracelets and was the
W.S.O.P Main Event Champion in 2000. He also carried out an interesting experiment in
2007 by turning $1 into over $10,000 on Full Tilt Poker, to show the power of good
money management skills.
Chris Ferguson's bankroll management rules were: -
- Never buy into a cash game or Sit & Go with more than more 5% of your total
bankroll. So if you want to play 1/2 cash with $200 buy in then, you want to have
at least $4000.
- Don't buy into a multi-table tournament with more than 2% of your total bankroll.
So if you want to play the $33 tourneys then you want a bankroll around $1650.
- If at any time during a No Limit or Pot Limit cash game session; the money on the
table represents more than 10% of your total bankroll, you must leave the table
when the blinds reach you. If the game is good, you can come back with less
money.
These rules are quite simple and effective. Sticking to these rules, you will be better
able to pick the games you should be playing at. More importantly, you will know when
its safe to try to move up a level and when to move down a level. It is very important that
if your bankroll starts to shrink, that you stick to the rules and adjust by moving down a
level. You can always build your bankroll back up before trying again at a higher level.
Hope this was useful. Good Luck!!!
