Free Odds Basic Strategy

The free odds bets are continuation bets that you can make on pass/don't pass & come/don't come bets. If you bet $10 on the pass line, once a point is established you have the option to increase your bet by placing odds on your pass line bet. So we could for example put odds of $30 on our pass line bet. We would now have a total of $40 at risk on the table and we would win and lose both the original pass line bet and the odds bet in the normal way pass line bets are won and lost. They are quite similar to the double option in blackjack, in that the bet is made in the middle of the game. The amount by which you can place odds vary casino to casino, it could be anything from double the original bet to 100 times the original bet.

The reason the free odds are interesting from a player's point of view is that these bets are paid at true odds. That is, the casino has no edge and therefore makes no profit from these bets. It is the only bet you can make at the casino with 0% house edge. Its for this reason, every craps player should be aware of how to use free odds to reduce the overall house edge to their betting.

The Point
Payout Ratio
Example
4 and 10
2 to 1
A $5 wager gets paid $10
5 and 9
3 to 2
A $5 wager is paid $7.50
6 and 8
6 to 5
A $5 wager is paid $6

Basic Strategy

The most mathematically efficient betting strategy on the craps table is to bet on the pass line and then take full odds after a point is established. The Pass Line carries a house edge of only 1.41% and is already one of the best deals in the casino (Actually Don't Pass is a little better with 1.36% house edge but generally craps players don't like to make don't pass bets). By then taking full odds you are reducing the overall house edge on your craps action. Below is a table showing how house edge diminishes overall on your pass line and don't pass bets by using free odds.

(Full Double Odds means the player can take 2.5x odds on a point for 6 or 8, and 2x on the other points. 3-4-5X Odds means the player can take 3X on the 4 and 10, 4X on the 5 and 9, and 5X on the 6 and 8.)

Clearly the more odds you take the lower you can drop the house edge. For this reason you should try to get the highest possible odds.

Keep in mind that you should try to stick within your desired betting range. That is, if you only want to risk $30 every round. It is better to put $10 on the pass line and then take $20 odds. Don't make a $30 pass line bet and then only put a little on the odds. You want to maximise the proportion of your money being bet on the odds.

Extra Action Use the Come bets with Odds

If you want more action but don't want to take the place and buy bets, you should use the come and don't come bets and then take odds once you have a working number. Like the pass line bets with odds, come bets with odds is much better than buy or place bets on the numbers.

For Internet

Theres no actual box for odds bets and can be a little confusing for new craps players wanting to try on the internet. In the picture below I've circled where the odds bets are placed at 888.com. Good Luck!
